2. Files do not install during the installation
************************************************************************
Before installing the HP LaserJet 5/5M Printing System, close
all applications and TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs
that load at startup (in Windows or DOS) such as virus checkers,
fax utilities, etc., and all other applications that may be open.
Also close all shell utilities such as: Microsoft Office
Manager, Norton Desktop, Dashboard, etc. Lastly, exit any
previous version of HP Status Window that may be running.
************************************************************************
3. Printer status does not seem to work correctly or is unavailable in
Windows 95
************************************************************************
Printer status reporting for Windows 95 occurs through a printer
icon located on the Windows 95 status bar (called the system
tray). If this icon is not appearing, check to ensure that the
JetAdmin utility is version 2.20 and a network service has been
installed. The electronic version of the LaserJet PCL driver does
not include JetAdmin--it must be downloaded separately. If the
JetAdmin utility is not installed or the wrong version is
installed, download JetAdmin from HP's electronic services and
install it or install the software that was provided with the
printer (before installing the downloaded driver). To install
a network service, follow your Windows 95 instructions.
Installing a network service is required regardless if the
printer is hooked to a network or directly to the computer.
************************************************************************
4. General Protection Fault occurs when running the JetAdmin Utility
************************************************************************
If a general protection fault occurs while trying to run the
JetAdmin Utility, check to make sure that version 2.20 or higher
is installed. If it is not, reinstall the HP LaserJet 5/5M
software provided with the printer. Use the custom installation
method to ensure that the correct files are installed.
************************************************************************
5. Document does not print correctly
************************************************************************
Several things can cause a document to not print correctly; not
enough memory in the printer to handle the document being
printed, incorrect behavior by applications, Windows or printer
drivers, or incorrect settings in the printer drivers. If using
the HP LaserJet 5/5M - Standard printer driver, try printing in
either HP-GL/2 or Raster modes or changing resolutions from 600
to 300. These modes can be selected in the printer setup dialog
under the Print Quality sheet. If neither of these modes fixes
the problem try using the HP LaserJet 5/5M - Enhanced printer
driver. If the problem occurs while printing with the HP
LaserJet 5/5M - Enhanced printer driver, try using the HP
LaserJet 5/5M - Standard printer driver.
************************************************************************
6. FontSmart - TrueType fonts do not appear in your application font
selection when you have a disk in the printer
************************************************************************
Under Windows 95, when you have a mass storage device, i.e. a Flash SIMM
or hard drive in your printer, you may not be able to see TrueType fonts
that you have downloaded, either in your application font selection
dialogues or the printer font's dialogue in FontSmart. This situation
only occurs when you do not have any PostScript fonts downloaded to the
mass storage device.
There are 2 workarounds:
WorkAround #1: Download any postscript font to mass storage.
WorkAround #2: Use this workaround if you do not need to download
PostScript fonts to the printer's mass storage device. Close FontSmart.
Use a text editor to edit the "fontsmrt.ini" file in the Windows
directory. Find the line "Mass Storage Type 1 Usage=-1". Change the -1
value to 0. Example: Mass Storage Type 1 Usage = 0. Save the file and
restart FontSmart. This workaround effectively disables your ability to
download postscript fonts to mass storage.
